There are benefits to home-grown products

"Anything I do, I do with the view of a consumer. I am as concerned as anyone else about food so if I know I won’t eat it or drink it, I don’t produce or sell it." These are words to live by for anyone in the food business but perhaps more so for farmers who are the life blood of the industry.

Jack Greydanus, along with his wife Christine, has been farming for more than 18 years and is one of 84 poultry breeders across Ontario. A large operation, this portion of the Greydanus farm is comprised of three barns, 30,000 hens and produces four million eggs per year.

Six acres of greenhouses are home to a hydroponic red pepper industry where Jack and Christine are in control of everything but the sunlight. The operation is conducted as naturally as possible hence an integrated pest management approach that applies a basic principle of ‘good bugs eat bad bugs’.
